Thomas Martell will unpick the seven practical evidence-based recommendations—that are relevant to all pupils, but particularly to those struggling with their literacy. He has reviewed the best available international research and consulted experts to arrive at key principles for effective literacy teaching. We will look at how to put this evidence into practice focussing on vocabulary and teaching outdoors. There will also be a change to shop for interventions at the intervention market place.

This drop-in will provide childminders the opportunity to come together with their children to enjoy fun activities linked to their children’s learning and development and strengthen friendships and links between other local childminders.

A childminding development worker from the Council will be running the session which will give all childminders regular access to support they may need.

There is no charge for FEEE-registered minders but there is a small fee for non-FEEE-registered minders of £1 for their first child and 50p for each additional child. On top of this we will be inviting professionals to attend these sessions. We recognise that childminders may sometimes find it hard to access services to support the needs of the children they care for. Therefore we will be inviting professionals such as Area SENCOs (Special Educational Needs Coordinators), Curriculum leaders, Speech and language therapists, Health visitors, Safeguarding advisors, Early Help advisors and FEEE officers to attend some of these drop-ins. This is a half-day workshop sessions which will provide information and guidance on The new Pupil Register system on the EY Provider Hub for establishing eligibility and validating codes for 2YO’s, 30hrs & EYPP to enable settings to deliver a high quality Early Years provision. It will also provide opportunities for professionals to pick up best practice business processes from across EY sectors.

The training will:
• Enable practitioners to explore theories of autism and consider the implications for practice.
• Provide practical strategies to support practitioners as they develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of effective autism practice.
• Enable practitioners to reflect on their practice and share their enhanced knowledge more widely across their organisation.

This session is suitable for practitioners working with school-age pupils on the autism spectrum in mainstream services. Practitioners in specialist settings who work with pupils with complex needs should undertake the one day complex needs module instead (Friday 9th March 2018).

The London Borough of Waltham Forest’s Schools Human Resources Service, in collaboration with Wardell Associates, Training & Consultancy Ltd, is pleased to announce the launch of an accredited Safer Recruitment workshop for schools in Waltham Forest. This is in response to the recent regulation changes as stated in the “Keeping Children Safe in Education July 2015” training requirement for recruitment panels. Wardell Associates were selected to deliver this training following a thorough assessment process that included a Head teacher representative, Schools Human Resources and the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO).

As you will know from 1 January 2010 it became mandatory that any appointments of school staff should be made by a recruitment panel that includes at least one person who has been trained in Safer Recruitment. This course is based on the updated version of the national accredited training that has been developed by the Safer Recruitment Consortium which has taken over responsibility for the design of the training.

The course is fully compliant with the national guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ 2015 and includes an assessment that is a requirement for all school based participants.

The Safer Recruitment training will enable schools to fulfil their responsibility to have in place safe recruitment and selection practice within the wider context of safeguarding children and to make safeguarding children central to all we do.

This course is also open to childcare providers. Whilst it is not statutory for childcare providers to follow the Government’s safer recruitment requirements, following these procedures would be good practice and will ensure compliance with the EYFS statutory requirements regarding recruitment and employment law.

- How to identify what voluntary funded items are eligible; what donor records must be maintained;
- How to stay within the boundaries of ethical donations and establish a recurring donation scheme that funds future projects.

Understanding the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead Professional and key areas of responsibility
• Understanding of the legislation and guidance underpinning their organisation’s policy, procedures and practice when responding to concerns about a child’s safety or welfare
• Ability to evidence compliance with Ofsted requirements to ensure all children are safe
• Ensuring that all staff in education settings are clear about possible indicators of ‘abuse’ and how these should be managed
• Awareness of the definitions of abuse and neglect and significant harm in order to make appropriate referrals for intervention
• Understanding the barriers that stop staff reporting concerns and how to overcome these
• Understanding of the processes followed by the MASH when a referral is made and the thresholds for intervention
• For the Designated Safeguarding Lead Professional to be actively involved in collaborative decision-making and the process for managing disagreement and or challenge
• Learning from serious case reviews
• Strategies to ensure that there are systems in place to monitor and evaluate outcomes for children who are in need or suffering or at risk of suffering significant harm

There is School DSL Refresher training (half-day) on Thursday 28 June for those who have previously attended DSL training within the last 2 years. Please make sure you choose the correct course for your needs.

If driving, please ensure you leave enough time to find a car parking space as these are very limited in the immediate area. Also, as a courtesy to other attendees and the training lead, please arrive in good time for a prompt start - if you arrive more than 15 minutes late you may not be admitted and you may be charged the full cost of the course (£125).

A fun and interactive Paediatric First Aid course covering the requirements of OfSTED and the EYFS Framework.
*Both sessions MUST be attended*

The 2-session course (12 hours in total) is approved by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB). This course is assessed more around practical ability and, although there is a theory assessment, this is written in such a way that it is easier for those with English as a second language to complete.
This course meets the needs for the EYFS Framework in the same way as the Level 3 Qualification.

The 2-session course can be physically strenuous at times and comfortable clothing should be worn. Please - no skirts or dresses as the course is practical and will involve some lying down.
There is a one hour break for lunch on each day but lunch will not be provided - only refreshments.
This course is renewed by re-taking a Paediatric First Aid course every three years.

Level 1 – Foundation of Good Governance
Typically, it is expected that new governors will take 12 months to complete the 6 modules and 2 self-assessment booklets needed to be an accredited governor at Level 2. It is anticipated that some established governors may wish to undertake this programme in which case it will also serve as refresher training or ‘continuous governor development’ (CGD).
Level 1 examines the role and expectations of the modern day governor through the 20 key competencies set out in GAP based on the DfE’s 3 core functions of governing bodies. There are three 2 hour linked training modules delivered over 6-8 weeks (autumn term) and a robust self-assessment booklet to be completed.
• Module 1 ‘Good governance – knowing my school’
• Module 2 ‘School data – what it all means’
• Module 3 ‘Keeping children safe – safeguarding and equality’

A certificate of induction will be awarded and enable governors to progress to level 2 ‘Accreditation’.
GAP Level 2 – Accredited governance
Building on level 1, this involves three further training modules, each lasting 2 hours. Governors will evidence how they contribute to effective governance and the impact of their work through their own school experiences.
• Module 4 ‘Driving school improvement in challenging financial times’
• Module 5 ‘Beyond the handbook – managing relationships’
• Module 6 ‘Ofsted – preparing for the phone call’
