Early Years SENCO training for PVIs - what you need to effectively support children with SEND

Session 1 - Introduction to the SEND Code of Practice 2014, local processes, the Disability Enablement Service and the role of the Area SENCO/setting SENCO - led by Area SENCOs
Session 2 - Data protection and confidentiality, working in partnership with parents, Early Help referral, referrals to Wood Street, Education Psychology Service (EPS) - led by Area SENCOs
Session 3 - Introduction to Autism - led by Fiona Davey (EPS)
Session 4 - Supporting Speech, Language and Communication – led by SALT
Session 5 - Early Years SEND support plans, outcomes and reviews, EHCP requests/reviews - led by Area SENCOs
Session 6 - Transitions for children with SEND and portfolio submission - led by Area SENCOs

Each session is considered a module. If a module is missed, a practitioner can make up the missed session next term. However, only a maximum of 2 modules can be made up next term. Any more than two and the course must be started again. Each practitioner who completes this course to a high enough standard will receive a certificate to acknowledge their ability to carry out SEND Support in an Early Years setting.

There are other 6-session courses available for PVIs in the spring and summer terms.

This drop-in will provide childminders the opportunity to come together with their children to enjoy fun activities linked to their children’s learning and development and strengthen friendships and links between other local childminders.

A children and family centre worker and a childminding development worker from the Council will be running the session which will give all childminders regular access to support they may need.

There is no charge for FEEE-registered minders but there is a small fee for non-FEEE-registered minders of £1 for their first child and 50p for each additional child. On top of this we will be inviting professionals to attend these sessions. “Independent Return Home interviews provide an opportunity to uncover information that can help protect children from the risk of going missing again, from risks they may have been exposed to while missing or from risk factors in their home” (Statutory guidance on children who go missing from home or care, 2014)

The course will cover:
• Why children and young people runaway and the risks they face while missing
• Different definitions of missing and the impact on the support given to children and young people.
• Detailed information about the Return Home Interview process
• Case Study based on a Serious Case Review of a missing young person
• Support available to children, young people and their families following a missing episode

To consider how the use of colour may affect our emotions
To understand the effects of laughing on the brain
To highlight simple play experiences to promote joy and laughter
To understand the importance of quality interactions

A TAF is a meeting that brings together children, young people, parents and practitioners and its function is to ensure families have an equal role in agreeing goals and actions that reflect the needs identified. A TAF allows information to be shared and ensures services are coordinated so that effective action and outcomes are properly planned, delivered and reviewed.

The EHA for children and young people is a key part of the strategy to shift the focus from dealing with the consequences of difficulties in children's lives to preventing things from going wrong in the first place. It is a national approach to conducting an assessment of the needs of a child or young person and deciding how those needs should be met.

A fun and interactive Paediatric First Aid course covering the requirements of OfSTED and the EYFS Framework.
This is a 12-hour HABC Level 3 & OFQUAL accredited course including a short exam to ensure that the theoretical knowledge has been retained.
The 2-day course can be physically strenuous at times and appropriate clothing should be worn. There is a one hour break for lunch on each day.
This course is renewed by re-taking a Paediatric First Aid course every three years.
Both sessions must be attended.

As a self-employed childminder there are likely to be a number of things that you are unclear about with regards to your tax return to HMRC such as:

• How you register if you are trading under a business name and not your name
• What you need to do if you start to employ an assistant
• The deadline dates for submission of your tax returns
• What National Insurance you’ll pay
• How to keep records and budget for your first tax bill
• What kind of business expenses you can claim for
• How to claim tax relief when buying or improving things, for example, vehicles or equipment that you buy to keep in your business

The Digital Education Team at HM Revenue and Customs is offering free online educational support for childminders to answer these questions for you.

The date for their next live webinar for childminders, including a question and answer session, is Wednesday 9th November at 7pm-8pm.

Waltham Forest Schools Forum has an important role under the school funding arrangements introduced in April 2006. It has a consultative role in relation to the local distribution of school funding and it is also able to decide on certain proposals from the local authority which currently have to go to the Secretary of State for decision. Further information about Waltham Forest's Schools Forum and details of the next meeting can be found on the Waltham Forest Council website.

The course will involve PowerPoint presentations as well as opportunities for discussion and practical activities. Each TA will be issued with the practical text Emotional Wellbeing: an Introductory Handbook and they will be sign-posted to other resources. It is also anticipated that TAs will begin to try out some of the things they have learned between sessions so they can provide feedback and gain support throughout the course.
