b) Literacy Champions – how to support all children to reach their potential as good readers
c) Self-regulation in young children

Description:

Anna Ephgrave is passionate about the need for children to feel confident and independent in their learning and development. The outdoor learning environment and risk taking play a large part in the experience she suggests children need to complete their learning experience. The focus of this keynote session is exploring adult/child interactions and open-ended questioning which are crucial to the idea of ‘teachable moments’ that occur throughout the day and support children’s progress.

Prospects Services have completed their Universal Health Checks in schools and we learn about the outcomes from this work which offered a unique overview of teaching and learning in the borough. The training schedule detailed on the Hub is a direct response of the UTLHC commission.

Workshops (35 minutes each – everyone will visit each workshop)
The LBWF Early Years team commissioned Speech and Language therapists from NELFT to offer the exciting universal ‘All Talk’ project in schools. We will hear from colleagues about this work and tips on supporting children with early communication skills.

Literacy Champions – we hear from colleagues about how to ensure a broad approach to language and literacy in the early years, supporting families to engage with literacy from the start of their child’s education. This session links with the ‘Literacy Project’ running in the borough which focuses on Year 1 and Year 2.

Self-regulation for young children means that they are able to manage their own emotions and empathise with others around them. The development of self-regulation and executive function is consistently linked with successful learning, including pre-reading skills, early mathematics and problem solving.

A hot lunch prepared and served by WFC students and refreshments are included on the day.

Outcome:

* An opportunity to network and meet colleagues from other schools in the borough, thus promoting school to school support.

* Attendees will hear from an experienced Early Years practitioner about a different way of teaching and learning with positive outcomes for children.

* Outcomes from the UTLHC commission are explained along with subsequent workshops addressing the needs of the Early Years sector in Waltham Forest.
