Guidance for Schools & Colleges

The DfE has issued comprehensive guidance about the school curriculum.

Religious education is compulsory for all pupils registered in maintained schools up to the age of 18. The Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE) is responsible for determining the syllabus for religious education (RE) in council-run or funded schools in Waltham Forest, which these schools must follow. Further information about Waltham Forest’s syllabus is available on Waltham Forest Council's website.

Sex and relationship education (SRE) is compulsory for all pupils registered in maintained secondary schools only. Maintained schools should have regard to the DfE’s guidance when providing SRE.

Schools must have a sex education policy (except maintained nursery schools). The governing body is free to determine how often this policy is reviewed. The governing body is free to delegate approval of the sex education policy to a committee of the governing body, an individual governor or the head teacher.
