Below you will find information and support from different external organisation on bullying in schools.

Supporting Transgender Children in Schools

Over the recent years we have been hearing more and more stories of transgender children. Many people may know a child in their community who may be transgender. In view of this ensuring that our schools are a supportive and safe environment for all children is paramount. You may encounter children or young people who are struggling with their gender identity, they may or may not have supportive parents.

Under the equality act 2010 any young person has a right to be addressed as whichever gender they identify as regardless of any diagnosis or medical intervention and irrespective of age.

Useful resources include:

  • The Human Rights Campaign has produced a useful resource guide to help professionals meet the needs of children, including debunking myths about transgender children and recommended steps for families and community can take to support transgender and gender-expansive kids in their lives.
  • GIRES - A UK wide organisation whose purpose is to improve the lives of trans and gender non-conforming people of all ages, including those who are non-binary and non-gender.
  • Mermaids supports transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children and young people until their 20th birthday, as well as their families and professionals involved in their care. They also currently offer web chat support to students up to the age of 25. Transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children and teens need support and understanding, as well as the freedom to explore their gender identity. Whatever the outcome, Mermaids is committed to helping families navigate the challenges they may face.
